From signal to change, every day.

Northern Lights sees what is happening in an operation and gets the organization to act on it. Everything that happens becomes an observation, whether it comes from a person on the floor, from telemetry or from the numbers. The inbox makes the signal understandable, the process library picks the right response, and the forums make sure the work gets done, followed up and turned into learning. Every turn of the loop leaves the organization a little better at adapting.

One closed loop. Every turn teaches the organization something.

Five stages, one object at the centre.

Whatever the sensor is, a person, a sensor on a machine, a KPI that drifts or an AI reading the pattern, it becomes the same thing: an observation. From there the loop is the same every time.

  1. 1See

Anyone at any site can capture what they notice. Telemetry and KPI rules raise their own observations. The organization gets one language for everything that happens.

  2. 2Analyze

The inbox is where raw signal becomes information: it is classified, prioritised, routed to the right unit and given an owner.

  3. 3Generate

Not every observation deserves the same response. The process library generates the right one: a quick fix, a root cause investigation, or a deviation with escalation.

  4. 4Execute

Assignments with an owner and a due date, broken into actions, driven by the forums. Nothing is closed without a recorded reason.

  5. 5Sustain

Forums drive the work, dashboards show each forum its own picture of reality, and the effect is measured so the organization learns.

Three kinds of response

When it is simple

  1. Observation
  2. Action
  3. Done

When it is complex

  1. Observation
  2. Root cause
  3. Improvement initiative
  4. Assignment
  5. Action

When it is critical

  1. Observation
  2. Deviation handling
  3. Escalation

Strategy from the top. Reality from the floor. They meet in the same work.

Hoshin Kanri breaks the vision down into initiatives, assignments and actions. Observations build upward from what the floor notices. Both end up in the same assignments, so a manager can read progress at any altitude without losing the layer below.

Top down

  1. Vision
  2. Strategic objectives
  3. Annual objectives
  4. Initiatives
  5. Assignments
  6. Actions

Bottom up

  1. Strategic objective
  2. Initiative
  3. Assignment
  4. Improvement
  5. Observation

Everyone looks at the same reality, from their own forum.

A forum is not a meeting. It is where the organization turns what it has learned into action. Each forum gets a dashboard built for what it decides on.
